Karyotypes of Allium grayi in Korea

Abstract
The karyotype analysis of Allimn grayi REGEL. accessions from 34 localities in Korea was conducted to obtain the basic information for genetic improvement. The karyotypes examined showed a large variation; 7 different types in the tetraploids from 25 localities and 4 different types in the pentaploids from 9 localities. K (2n)=24V+8J in tetraploid and K (2n)=30-V+10J in pentaploid were the most prevalent. Karyotype analysis revealed that tetraploid and pentaploid have the metacentrics, submetacentrics and subterminals. Some of the localities were found to have a submetacentric or a subterminal with a satellite. The range of length for the somatic chromosomes was 5.0-10.0§ but some localities were found to have one long chromosome as long as 18.6§. It was found that there were much variation in the karyotype of Allium grayi in Korea. From the karyotypic variations of Korean local Allium grayi. it was postulated that finding of useful characteristics and subsequent selection of new cultivur(s) are possible.
